Jadavpur University has long been the center of political and administrative controversies. In August 2023, a first year student died in his hostel due to ragging. Cases related to sexual harassment have also come to light. The university was also surrounded by controversies because it did not have a full-time Vice-Chancellor.
In December 2025, during an examination, there was a dispute over asking a student wearing hijab to remove her hijab in the name of checking headphones. The state government had set up an inquiry committee. Sometimes there was controversy in the university due to elections not being held, sometimes there was uproar over the entry of the Governor. Due to political reasons, this university has been at the center of conflict between Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party till the elections.
