The Dutch Grand Prix 2026 main race is set for lights out at Circuit Zandvoort following an eventful Sprint weekend. McLaren’s Lando Norris starts from pole position after topping Saturday’s qualifying session, with Mercedes driver George Russell and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc lining up behind him in the top three. With local favourite Max Verstappen starting seventh for Red Bull Racing after setup struggles, track position will play a big role across the 72-lap battle.
The Sprint format meant teams had only one Free Practice session on Friday to dial in their setups before Sprint Qualifying. Mercedes looked sharp early on, with George Russell securing the Sprint pole. During the 24-lap Sprint race on Saturday, Russell put in a lights-to-flag performance to claim the victory. He held off Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and McLaren’s Lando Norris, while his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli crossed the line in fourth.
McLaren had to settle for third in the Sprint, but Lando Norris bounced back emphatically during Saturday afternoon’s traditional qualifying session, securing a pole position for Sunday’s Grand Prix. The tight, twisty nature of Zandvoort makes track position vital, giving Norris a big advantage.
On the other hand, it was a frustrating Saturday for home favourite Max Verstappen. The Red Bull driver struggled with setup limitations and could only manage to qualify seventh, leaving him with a mountain to climb to challenge the front-runners.
