Will there be a holiday for LPG Cylinder? Government is bringing new system of LPG, know the complete plan

New Delhi: The Government of India is accelerating steps towards increasing the use of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) by reducing the dependence on LPG cylinders in domestic kitchens. Let us tell you, the Petroleum Ministry has asked the states and union territories to provide administrative support at the district level to increase PNG connections in those areas where pipeline network already exists.

The ministry has directed to appoint a nodal officer in every district. This officer will coordinate between gas distribution companies, oil companies and local administration, so that the process of new PNG connections can be made easier.

Why is the government emphasizing on PNG?

Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal, in a letter sent to the Chief Secretaries of the states on August 21, described PNG as an important part of the country's energy transition. The government believes that the gas reaching homes through pipes can reduce the logistics burden associated with transportation and distribution of LPG cylinders. Along with this, better use of the already existing city gas distribution network will also be possible. Apart from this, the district administration will be given the responsibility of coordinating between PNG companies and LPG distributors, resolving consumer complaints and expediting the connection process.

Lessons learned from West Asia crisis

The experience of the recent West Asia crisis is also considered important behind this decision of the government. India imports a large part of its LPG requirement and supplies from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kuwait are important. If there is any obstruction in these routes, there is a risk that the domestic LPG supply will be affected. In comparison, domestic PNG supply remained relatively stable. After this experience, piped gas network is being seen as a strong option in terms of energy security.

Where will the new system be implemented?

According to the government, provisions related to ban on having both LPG and PNG connections are being implemented where PNG network is available. However, this rule will be limited only to areas with PNG facility. For this, PNG Coordination Committee (PCC) will be formed, which will identify potential houses and housing societies. The district administration will cooperate in getting necessary permissions from RWAs and societies and in expanding the pipeline. The government aims to gradually shift households from cylinder to piped gas in PNG available areas.
