The Rajasthan government has prepared a roadmap for the rejuvenation of government schools from 2026-27 to 2028-29. New buildings, 83,783 classrooms, renovation, toilets, smart classes, tablets and ICT labs will be developed with about Rs 12,500 crore.
Jaipur: The Rajasthan government has prepared a comprehensive roadmap for the next three years to strengthen the infrastructure of government schools. Between 2026-27 and 2028-29, about Rs 12,500 crore will be spent on developing new buildings, classrooms, toilets, repairs, smart classes and digital facilities in schools. The objective of the scheme is to provide government schools with safe, modern and better learning environment for the students.
3,587 new school buildings and 83,783 classrooms will be built
Under the proposed scheme of the state government, 3,587 new government school buildings will be constructed in the state. A provision of approximately Rs 2,487.75 crore has been made for these buildings. Along with this, there is a plan to create 83,783 new classrooms to meet the need of additional classrooms for the students. About Rs 8,378.30 crore will be spent on these.
The government believes that availability of adequate classrooms in schools will provide a better educational environment to the students and will reduce the pressure on the existing buildings. Removing the lack of basic facilities in rural and remote areas is also an important part of this scheme.
22,589 schools will undergo major repairs
There are a large number of government schools in Rajasthan where buildings require repair and safety work. Under the roadmap, major repairs will be done in 22,589 schools. A provision of about Rs 1,129.45 crore has been made for this.
The repair work will focus on improving the condition of the buildings and creating a safe environment for students and teachers. The government's plan is not limited to just constructing new buildings, but also improves old and weak school buildings in a phased manner.
Construction of 13,616 new toilets
Keeping in mind the cleanliness and convenience of students in schools, a plan has been made to construct 13,616 new toilet complexes. A provision of about Rs 340.40 crore has been made for these works.
Adequate and safe sanitation facilities in schools are considered important for regular attendance and learning, especially for girl students. In such a situation, this scheme of the government is an important step towards strengthening the sanitation system along with the infrastructure of schools.
Roadmap prepared after technical survey in 41 districts
According to the government, on the instructions of Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, a technical survey of government school buildings was conducted through district collectors in all 41 districts of the state. Based on the needs revealed in this survey and the condition of the buildings, the works have been prioritized for the next three financial years.
The plan, running from 2026-27 to 2028-29, covers schools in immediate need as well as infrastructure to be developed in the long term. The government claims that around Rs 2,200 crore was spent on school infrastructure in the last five years. Now the scope of investment is being expanded significantly through the proposed scheme.
Work worth Rs 3,006 crore already in process
Along with the long-term roadmap, work has also been started on immediate needs. According to the government, development works worth about Rs 3,006.34 crore are in various stages of approval or tender process.
Of these, works worth about Rs 620 crore related to 518 new school buildings are approved or in the tender process. Of these, construction of 181 buildings has also started. This indicates that the government has also started taking forward the construction works at the grassroots level with the three-year plan.
20 percent of MLA funds will be spent on schools
The government has also linked MLA funds to the scheme to increase local level investment in school infrastructure. It has been decided to spend 20 percent of the annual fund of Rs 5 crore received by each MLA on the basic facilities of schools.
Under this, proposals worth about Rs 600 crore for the construction of 894 new school buildings have been sent to NABARD and the Finance Department for loan approval. At the same time, work worth about Rs 300 crore for the construction of 2,906 new classrooms has been approved and is said to be in progress.
A provision of Rs 550 crore has been made for major repairs and security related works and Rs 936.34 crore for educational, residential and special facilities.
New building in Rampura-Kanwarpura school from September 1
The construction of the new building of the Government Primary School located at Rampura-Kanwarpura in Jaipur is planned to start from September 1. This school was declared dilapidated in the year 2025. For the construction of the new building, Rs 12 lakh has been sanctioned from DMFT and Rs 6 lakh from MLA fund.
This example shows that the government is working towards replacing school buildings declared dilapidated on priority basis. An important objective of the scheme is to create a better environment for the safety and studies of students in such schools.
Emphasis also on smart classes, tablets and ICT lab
Rajasthan government is also paying special attention to connecting government schools with digital education. About Rs 1,087 crore is being spent for digital facilities by December 2026.
Under this programme, there are plans to set up about 5,000 smart classrooms, 80,000 tablets and 7,000 ICT labs. This is expected to promote technology-based education in government schools.
The expansion of digital resources can be especially useful for students who do not have easy access to technology facilities like private schools. The possibilities of teaching science, mathematics and other subjects in a more practical manner will increase through smart classes and ICT labs.
Focus on science education and students with special needs
The roadmap also includes science education and facilities for students with special needs. Under the scheme, a provision of Rs 507.60 crore has been made for the construction of 2,256 science laboratory rooms.
Apart from this, about Rs 40 crore will be spent on developing facilities for students with special needs. Its objective is to make schools more inclusive, so that students with disabilities and special needs can also avail better educational facilities.
The scheme also includes works related to five hostels, 13 DIET Centers of Excellence and 79 hostel buildings. A provision of Rs 936.34 crore has been made for these educational and residential facilities.
Atal centers will be built in 5 thousand gram panchayats
The government scheme is not limited to school buildings only. There is also a plan to develop Atal Kendras in about 5,000 gram panchayats of the state. There is a provision to spend approximately Rs 750 crore on these centres.
In rural areas such centers can play a role in providing useful infrastructure for education and community activities at the local level. This is likely to establish better connectivity between government institutions and the rural community.
Attempt to change the basic structure of the education system
The Rajasthan government's three-year roadmap is not just a plan to increase construction activities in government schools, but also aims to simultaneously strengthen the safety of buildings, adequate classrooms, cleanliness, digital education, science laboratories and inclusive facilities.
If the projects are completed as per the stipulated timeline and budget, then a major change can be seen in the physical and technical infrastructure of government schools in the state in the next three years. However, timely completion of such a large scale scheme, maintaining quality of construction and equitable distribution of facilities to rural and remote areas will be a significant challenge for the government.
Overall, the proposed investment of about Rs 12,500 crore between 2026-27 to 2028-29 is a step to give a new direction to the infrastructure of Rajasthan's public education system.
