Guwahati: Amid the continuing transport deadlock between Assam and Meghalaya, police authorities of both states have put in place a dedicated coordination mechanism to help stranded vehicles and passengers cross the inter-state border safely.
Meghalaya Police has appointed DSP (Security) B. Nongsiej, MPS, as its nodal officer for the exercise. He will serve as the main point of contact for coordination with Assam Police and police units across Meghalaya.
From Assam, Rajendra Ojah, SP (Zonal), has been assigned the corresponding responsibility.
The arrangement is aimed at dealing with cases where vehicles or people remain stranded on either side of the border. Information regarding such vehicles will be collected and forwarded to the Meghalaya Special Branch Control Room, which will coordinate with the concerned district police authorities.
Where necessary, police escorts will be provided to facilitate the movement of vehicles and passengers. Meghalaya’s district Superintendents of Police have been instructed to maintain direct coordination with their Assam counterparts whenever such assistance is required.
The Meghalaya police order also calls for immediate communication with the concerned district police chief whenever vehicles traveling from Assam require an escort to enter the state.
Control rooms in both states will remain connected to ensure that requests for assistance are passed on quickly and appropriate arrangements are made.
The directive has been implemented with immediate effect and will continue until further orders.
The move comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions over the movement of vehicles between Assam and Meghalaya. With transport operators from the two states locked in a standoff, the police-led coordination system is intended to minimize disruption and ensure that stranded travelers and vehicles are not left without assistance.
