Iconic Bengaluru theatre Urvashi bids adieu after 56 years

Bengaluru, Aug 24 (PTI) The iconic Urvashi Theatre, which witnessed the release of thousands of movies in various languages in its 56-years of existence, will become a thing of the past.

Demolition of the single-screen theatre on Lalbagh Road here, which was inaugurated by the Kannada matinee idol Dr Rajkumar, began.

Urvashi theatre, with a capacity of 1,100 audience was one of the biggest cinema halls in the city.

A regular filmgoer, Manohar Nagaraj recalled, it was common for audiences to come here and celebrate whenever films of their favourite stars were released.

“I saw many film actors coming here to promote their movies, and the audience going crazy as their favourite song, dialogue and actor appeared on the screen.

The process of demolishing this iconic theatre has started on Monday following a court order.

Excavators on Monday began roaring after the seats were removed.

As people’s emotions were attached to this theatre, police personnel were deployed at the demolition site to avoid any law-and-order situation. PTI
