One Nation, One Election Bill : Political discussions have intensified in the country regarding 'One Nation, One Election' bill. The reason for which is the latest statement of PP Chaudhary, Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee considering the related bills. PP Choudhary on Monday said that if the Constitution is amended and state governments support it, it is possible to hold simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies in 2029 under the 'One Country, One Election' initiative. But, former Union Minister and Congress MP P. Chidambaram has termed this claim as false.

Congress Rajya Sabha MP P Chidambaram on Tuesday said the bill related to 'One Nation, One Election' violates the basic features of the Constitution, especially the principles of parliamentary democracy in a federal country. He wrote in an ex-post, 'I am grateful for the opportunity to present my views on ONOE before the JPC. I cannot disclose the evidence I presented before the JPC, but the main objective of my statement was to show that this bill violates the basic features of the Constitution, especially the principles of parliamentary democracy in a federal country.
Chidambaram completely rejected the claim of holding state assembly elections and Lok Sabha elections 2029 simultaneously. He said, 'I have read the statement of JPC Chairman that simultaneous elections are possible in 2029. I am afraid that his opinion is wrong and it is against the provisions of the Bill. Even if the Bill is passed (which is highly unlikely), the 'fixed date' under the Bill can only be a date 'after the general elections'. The next general elections will be held in 2029. Therefore, simultaneous elections are not possible in 2029, and this is a good thing.
He further said, 'Congress and other opposition parties will launch a nationwide campaign against this bill, because this bill is a huge tampering with the Constitution in terms of parliamentary democracy in a federal country.'
