Karnataka state government has taken punitive action against online marketing companies Amazon, Big Basket, Instamart. Allegedly against them, those companies were selling poisonous dhotro fruit online as a product suitable for human consumption. The Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSSAI) suspended the licenses of Amazon, BigBasket, Instamart after the matter came to light.
A few days ago the authorities had ordered a probe into the sale of dodgy products and their online listing on platforms. This time strict action was taken against popular 'quick commerce' companies based on specific complaints. Investigation by the administration revealed that Dhutura fruits and seeds were being listed for sale on various e-commerce platforms. In some cases it even mentioned the FSSAI license or registration number. But these products are toxic and pose a serious threat to human health.
On receiving such complaints, notices were sent to three organizations by FSSAI. However, Amazon did not respond. Instamart wants additional time to submit the documents regarding the action taken. On the other hand, Big Basket responded, they have stopped selling the 'poisonous' fruits online. In future packets will clearly state “not fit for human consumption”.
Although the Karnataka Food Safety Department said, the companies' explanation was not satisfactory. It is illegal to store, sell or distribute these products as food. As a result, the food licenses of Amazon, Instamart and Big Basket have been suspended until further notice. This suspension can only be lifted through a hearing after the platforms are held accountable.
