Chidambaram calls One Nation, One Election unconstitutional – Read

New Delhi, Aug 25:

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has strongly opposed the One Nation, One Election proposal, describing it as “monstrous”, “mindless” and unconstitutional.

Appearing before a Joint Parliamentary Committee, Chidambaram argued that curtailing the five-year tenure of legislatures would violate the basic structure of the Constitution.

He also questioned whether the government had the required two-thirds majority to pass the proposed legislation, which seeks to synchronise Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
