Price Of Sugar: Ex mill price of sugar reduced to Rs 55, price will fall soon in retail market also

New Delhi. Sugar prices are on the decline due to central government's actions regarding stock limit, import and refining. According to Union Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra, the ex-mill price of sugar has fallen by 18 percent. The ex mill price of sugar has now become Rs 55. The Food Secretary claimed that the ex-mill price of sugar will reduce further in the coming days. The effect of reduction in ex-mill price of sugar is not yet visible in the retail market. This may take a day or two.

Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said that the price of sugar was increased by the mills. He said that the rise in sugar prices was not due to fundamental reasons and there were sufficient reserves of sugar in the country. Domestic demand for sugar is 285 lakh tonnes. At the same time, from October 2025 to September 2026, sugar production has decreased from the estimated 343 lakh tonnes to 306 lakh tonnes. Talking about the price of sugar, according to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, the wholesale price of sugar on August 24 was Rs 58.29. The price of sugar in the retail market on Tuesday was Rs 63.05 per kg. Last week the ex-mill price of sugar had become Rs 67 per kg. Due to which the price of sugar in the retail market reached Rs 70 per kg.

Seeing the continuously increasing prices of sugar, the Central Government had earlier made a rule on its stock. Under this, it was made necessary for those who consume 10 lakh tonnes of sugar every month to keep stock for only 15 days. After this, the Center took immediate steps and decided to import 10 lakh tonnes of raw sugar without duty. Apart from this, an order was also issued to refine and sell raw sugar within two months. Only after this the ex-mill prices of sugar declined. The central government had earlier said that the rising price of sugar is not due to ethanol manufacturing. Less cultivation of sugarcane due to rain and weather is the reason for the increase in the price of sugar.
