NASA to launch Roman Telescope : US space agency NASA is all set to launch its new space telescope. Its name is the Nancy Grace Rome Space Telescope. The launch will take place on August 30. It is commonly known as the Roman telescope. This telescope will help astronomers understand the universe better. It will provide close-up views of space, making it easier to study celestial objects. With the help of the Roman telescope, scientists could understand even small and limited areas.
There are many reasons behind this need. For example the universe is expanding rapidly. Rome will investigate some of astronomy’s greatest mysteries. One of its main targets is dark energy. The telescope will also study galaxies, stars and exoplanets.
100 times larger view, how special is the Rome telescope?
The Roman telescope will prove to be very useful as it will provide a field of view 100 times larger than the Hubble telescope. According to NASA, this telescope will be able to measure the light coming from a billion galaxies. The observatory will be able to directly observe planets outside the solar system, i.e. planets and planet-forming disks, by blocking out starlight. It will be able to perform statistical calculations of planetary systems in the galaxy, and also find answers to important questions related to dark energy, exoplanets and infrared astrophysics.
The Roman telescope was designed for large-scale astronomy. Instead of focusing on a small area of the sky, it can capture a much larger area. This can help scientists build a clearer picture of changes in the universe over billions of years. If all goes according to plan, NASA’s new eye could soon reveal the universe’s greatest mysteries.
How will the launch and what are the preparations of NASA?
Preparations for the launch of the telescope are almost complete. The team installed it safely inside a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket at the Payload Hazards Servicing Facility at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Roman telescope is housed in a protective shell (fairing) 43 feet high. This enclosure will act as a protective shield for the telescope during launch.
During liftoff, the fairing protects the Roman rocket from sound vibrations, pressure and heat as it passes through Earth’s atmosphere. A few minutes into the flight, when conditions are safe, the fairing detaches, allowing the Roman telescope to continue its journey toward its target at the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 2 (L2). Meanwhile, both parts of the fairing return to Earth and are retrieved by SpaceX.
Teams will soon transport the Roman telescope to SpaceX’s hangar at Launch Pad 39A, where the encapsulated payload will be attached to a Falcon Heavy rocket and then transported to the pad at Launch Complex 39A.
