New Delhi, 26 August 2026: With the increasing prevalence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology globally, its security is becoming a big challenge. According to a recent report by renowned research and advisory firm Gartner, the global market for securing AI systems is expected to reach approximately $4.8 billion (approximately ₹ 40,000 crore) by 2027. This figure shows an increase of 68.7 percent compared to the year 2026. According to Gartner projections, this rapid growth will continue and the market will reach $7.7 billion by 2028.
Talking about the main reasons for the surge in the AI security market, Gartner Senior Principal Analyst Shailendra Upadhyay said that this surge is coming due to the urgent need to secure AI systems in enterprises, address newly emerging vulnerabilities and strengthen security against complex cyber threats. This growth is mainly due to supply chain and third-party risks, as the increased use of third-party and open-source software in AI projects has increased the risk of supply chain attacks. Additionally, enterprise AI projects launched without adequate security and visibility controls run a high risk of failure.

Apai warning regarding cyber attack
The report also gives a worrying warning that by 2029, more than half of successful cyber attacks on AI agents will be carried out by exploiting access control weaknesses and prompt injections. Talking about investment in different segments, 'AI Application Security' will be the largest spending category with an estimated expenditure of $851 million by 2027, while 'AI Usage Control' will be the fastest growing segment with a growth of 73% ($749 million) and 'AI Gateway' will be the second fastest growing segment with a growth of 70.9%.
Explaining why traditional security systems are inadequate, Shailendra Upadhyay added that, traditional security tools generally treat AI applications like other software, but these systems require major updates to fight specific AI-based threats. As autonomous AI systems create new vulnerabilities to traditional monitoring, businesses will need to integrate their existing security systems with specialized AI security tools. As AI runtime protection and dedicated gateways become more reliable, companies are increasingly adopting these tools.
