Dirt in the kitchens of two big 5-star hotels in Delhi, FSSAI issues notice

Negligence regarding the quality and cleanliness of food items has come to light in two big hotels of Delhi. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued notices to both JW Marriott and Andaz Hotel located at Aerocity after inspecting them. During the inspection, officials found many flaws ranging from storage of food items to cleanliness of the kitchen. The investigation revealed that the arrangements for storing and maintaining food items were not as per the prescribed standards.

Questions on kitchen cleanliness also

The FSSAI investigation team inspected the kitchens and food storage areas of the hotels. During this period, deficiencies related to cleaning and maintenance were found. Officials also raised objection regarding the safe storage of food items. After the inspection, FSSAI has issued a notice to the concerned hotel management asking them to respond to the lapses and ensure adherence to the prescribed food safety standards.

Rotten fruits, vegetables and moldy items found in JW Marriott

FSSAI team found many food items in poor condition during the inspection of JW Marriott. Fungus and rotten tomatoes were found on apples. Some food items were kept in the open, while the storage arrangements for vegetables were also not found proper. The investigation also revealed shortcomings in the arrangement for keeping vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items separate. The problem of cockroaches and other insects was found in different kitchens of the hotel. Apart from this, deficiencies like lack of cleanliness in the kitchen, poor storage containers and exhaust system not working properly were also found. Negligence was also found in the arrangements for keeping allergy-causing elements in food items separate from other food items.

87 kg expired goods found in Andaz Hotel

FSSAI's investigation also revealed many serious deficiencies in Andaz Hotel. During inspection, about 87 kg of expired sweets, cake base and bread packets were found. The officials immediately removed these food items from the spot. In Andaz Hotel too, negligence was found in arrangement for keeping vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items separate, cleanliness, pest control and proper storage of food items. FSSAI has issued a notice to the hotel management after deficiencies found during inspection in both the hotels. Answers have been sought from the officials on following the standards related to food safety and hygiene.

87 kg expired food items in Andaz Hotel

FSSAI investigation also revealed serious negligence in Andaz Hotel. About 87 kg of expired sweets, cake base and bread packets were found here, which were immediately removed from the spot by the officials. Deficiencies were also found in the hotel regarding separate maintenance of veg and non-veg food items, cleanliness, pest control and proper storage of food items.

Food samples taken from both the hotels

FSSAI has also taken food samples from both the hotels. After the investigation report of these samples comes, further action will be taken under food safety rules. Inspection revealed that the arrangements for separating and maintaining veg and non-veg food items in both the hotels were not adequate. FSSAI has directed hotel management to remove these deficiencies and ensure adherence to food safety standards.

According to officials, after receiving the lab report of the sample, it will be decided whether the food items meet the prescribed standards or not. Based on the shortcomings revealed in the report and inspection, further action can be taken against the concerned hotel management.

Along with this, reply has also been sought from both the hotel managements regarding the notice.
