Newcastle United secured its first win under new manager Matthias Jaissle as Harvey Barnes’ brace helped it beat West Bromwich Albion 3-2 in the second round of the EFL Cup.
The Magpies announced new signing Nico Gonzalez to rapturous applause ahead of kick-off, but was forced to work hard for victory by its Midlands opponent.
It fell behind in the 19th minute when Isaac Price caught goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen out with a free-kick at the near post before new signings Amar Dedic and Bazoumana Toure combined for the equaliser.
Barnes replaced Toure at the break, and scored three minutes later by firing a loose ball in the penalty area into the net.
West Brom levelled again from the spot, with Price slotting home after Lewis Hall’s handball before Barnes scored the winner, finishing off a Dedic cross to send Newcastle through to a third round tie against Millwall.

Everton also progressed to the next round after a comfortable 4-0 win over manager David Moyes’ old team, Preston North End.
The win was set up by a hattrick from striker Thierno Barry, who started the Premier League season with a brace against Crystal Palace, before Brennan Johnson scored his first goal for the Toffees.
It will now play Wolverhampton Wanderers in the third round.
