The absence of Akshaye Khanna from the much-awaited Dil Chahta Hai reunion had fans wondering what happened. The actor was expected to join his co-stars at an event celebrating 25 years of the cult Bollywood film, but ultimately did not make an appearance.
The reunion brought together Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia, Sonali Kulkarni, director Farhan Akhtar and producer Ritesh Sidhwani, among others.
Why was Akshaye Khanna absent?
The mystery surrounding Akshaye Khanna’s absence has now been cleared up.
Event host Nikhil Taneja had earlier confirmed that Khanna would attend the reunion. However, when fans noticed that the actor was missing, several took to Taneja’s Instagram comments to ask about his whereabouts.
Responding to one such comment, Nikhil revealed that the actor had fallen ill.
“He fell sick unfortunately,” Taneja wrote.
The brief response appeared to confirm that Khanna’s absence was due to health reasons rather than a scheduling issue.
Preity G Zinta was also unavailable
Akshaye Khanna was not the only actor who could not make it to the reunion.
When asked about Preity G Zinta’s absence, Nikhil explained that she was unavailable despite the organisers exploring different possibilities to bring her to the event.
“Unfortunately was unavailable after several permutations and combinations,” he commented.
Dil Chahta Hai reunion brings back nostalgia
The reunion marked 25 years since Dil Chahta Hai first hit theatres and became one of the defining films of modern Hindi cinema.
The film, directed by Farhan Akhtar, starred Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna as three friends whose lives and relationships change as they grow older. Preity G Zinta, Dimple Kapadia and Sonali Kulkarni were also part of the ensemble cast.
The anniversary gathering prompted a wave of nostalgia among fans, who celebrated the film’s enduring popularity and its influence on Bollywood’s portrayal of friendship.
Khanna’s absence, however, quickly became one of the biggest talking points surrounding the event.
Akshaye Khanna's recent success
Khanna has largely stayed away from the public spotlight following the success of Dhurandhar, in which he played Rehman Dakait.
The actor earned widespread praise for his performance in the film, which went on to become a major box-office success, reportedly crossing the ₹1,000 crore mark.
Khanna was also expected to feature in Drishyam 3 but reportedly exited the project shortly before filming began following differences with the makers.
Despite his low-key public presence, the actor continues to attract considerable attention from fans, particularly whenever his iconic earlier performances are revisited.
For now, fans will have to settle for the reunion memories without the presence of one of Dil Chahta Hai’s central stars. The reason, as confirmed by the event host, was simply that Khanna had fallen ill.
