The first indigenous Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV) built for the Indian Navy was handed over to the Navy. This vessel has been named Pro. Let us tell you that more than 75 percent indigenous material has been used in the project. It is built by Larsen & Toubro Company (L&T) in Kattupalli. The Supporter has been designed to perform a variety of maritime missions from a single vessel.
Many tasks can be done with this one vessel. Now, work like testing of new weapons and equipment, monitoring and gathering information on the sea, patrolling the maritime border, and providing relief and help in disasters like storms and floods will be done on a single ship.

What is multi-purpose vessel?
This ship has been named Pro, which means one who helps or supports. This ship will not only serve one purpose but will act as a reliable assistant in many types of tasks. Hence this name was kept. It was inducted into the Indian Navy on 27 August 2026. This multi-purpose ship will be used in maritime surveillance, patrolling, testing of new naval equipment and disaster relief operations, this will strengthen India's maritime security in the Indian Ocean.
Why did the Navy need this?
The Navy needed support because there were no dedicated ships to test new weapons and sensors, so real combat ships had to be used, making them less available for their primary tasks. Also, the Navy wanted a ship that could perform multiple tasks, such as surveillance, patrolling and disaster relief, so that separate ships would not have to be built for different tasks. Earlier many such ships were purchased from abroad, hence the government has now taken a big step in making the country self-reliant by building such ships in India itself.
Navy's work will become easier with this ship
Apart from testing weapons and sensor detection equipment, this ship will also help in monitoring the sea and gathering information. It will also work for patrolling the sea border and providing relief and help to people in disasters like storms and floods.
