Google new monitoring starts, RAM-heavy apps in trouble

Google : Google has announced new quality rules for Android apps, aimed at reducing excessive RAM consumption by apps. According to the company, it is necessary to maintain excellent phone performance amid increasing pressure on memory chip availability. Under the new rules, action will be taken against apps that consume more resources than the specified memory and performance limits. These rules will be enforced from February 2027 and non-compliant apps may have their visibility on Google Play reduced as well as publishing features.

Limits on apps’ RAM usage

Google Introduced new rules regarding memory usage for Android apps. The company says that there is increasing pressure on hardware supply in the mobile industry, which may affect device memory availability in the near future. With this in mind, Android is enforcing extensive memory limits, so that no single app consumes too much of the phone’s memory and slows down the entire system.

Google Play is now setting performance standards in three areas namely Code Optimization, Bitmap Memory Usage and Dynamic Memory Usage.

Developers have to optimize the app

Apps available on Google Play must achieve at least 25 percent coverage in optimization, shrinking and obfuscation with tools like R8. Google has clarified that apps that use more resources than the specified limit may affect performance and may even be closed.

New diagnostic tools are also being provided in Play Console to help developers. Android Vitals includes detailed memory information, out-of-memory (OOM) crash filtering, DEX code optimization details, and alerts when thresholds are exceeded.

There will be strict implementation from February 2027

These new rules will be implemented from February 2027. Apps and games that do not meet the specified requirements may be restricted from features related to visibility and publishing on Google Play. Google has said that more information related to these rules will be shared by the end of this year.

Apart from this, the company has also introduced the ‘Zero-tap sign-in’ standard. Under this, apps that facilitate user sign-in must automatically restore the user’s sign-in status after switching to a new Android device.
