New Delhi. The Election Commission had conducted intensive special verification (SIR) of voters in Delhi and Maharashtra. After the SIR, the Election Commission has released the draft voter list of Delhi and Maharashtra on Monday. The Election Commission has deleted the names of a large number of voters in both the states. Now in both the states, people whose names are not in the voter list can claim till September 30. At the same time, objection can be filed for deletion of the name given in the draft voter list till this date.
Talking about Delhi, after the SIR of the Election Commission, names of 4756722 voters are not in the voter list that came after the SIR. Earlier there were 1.45 crore voters in Delhi. After SIR, now names of 9753507 voters are left. Whereas, names of 2.07 crore voters in Maharashtra are not in the draft voter list. Before the Election Commission's SIR, there were about 9.78 crore voters in Maharashtra. According to the Election Commission, in both the states, voters who have died, shifted to another place and have dual names have been deleted. The final voter list of both the states will be released on 6 November 2026.
The Election Commission first started SIR in Bihar. After which SIR was conducted in many states including West Bengal and UP. After this, the process of SIR is going on in 13 states and many union territories. The Election Commission's SIR process is going to continue till December this year. A petition was also filed in the Supreme Court against the SIR of the Election Commission. After the hearing, the Supreme Court had said that due to the rights given under the Constitution, the Election Commission has the right to conduct SIR. So that the names of the citizens appear in the voter list and non-Indians cannot vote in the elections. The Election Commission had also given the same argument in the court.
