Delhi Students Protest : The Central Government has filed an application in the Supreme Court. It demands cancellation of the FIR lodged by the police against the protesters over allegations of violence during the NEET paper leak protests in Delhi and other states. The court will hear the matter tomorrow (Tuesday, September 1).

Using Article 142 of the Constitution, the Central Government has filed an application in the Supreme Court demanding quashing of the FIR related to the student protests. The Solicitor General of India has requested to list the matter for hearing tomorrow itself. CJI has agreed to list it for hearing tomorrow.
Mehta placed this application before the bench headed by CJI Surya Kant. He said that the central government wants the apex court to use its extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution and do complete justice by quashing the FIR registered against the protesters. The court will hear the matter tomorrow (Tuesday, September 1).
The Solicitor General of India raised the matter orally with the CJI when the bench was about to rise, and sought an urgent hearing yesterday itself. When the CJI asked what the petition was about, the SG replied, “It is about that protest… to quash the FIR… we are using Article 142.” CJI Surya Kant replied, “Okay, you file. If the parties are in agreement… then we have no problem.”
Let us tell you that this step has been taken by CJP before the protest march announced on September 5 in Delhi. The march is based on allegations that the central government has not fulfilled its promise to withdraw cases against protesters who took part in the nationwide protests in July over the exam paper leak issue. One of the conditions put forward by the CJP to end the students' protest on July 25 was withdrawal of these cases.
