Threat amid conflict with NDA ally on reservation issue

  • The news of threat to Chirag Paswan has come at a time when differences have emerged with his NDA ally Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) on the issue of review of SC reservation and sub-categories in quota in Bihar.
  • On August 30, Chirag Paswan had demanded the resignation of HAM(S) founder and Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi and his son and Bihar government minister Santosh Kumar Suman.
  • While opposing the demand for review of SC reservation, Chirag had said that reservation is not a donation, but it is a right given by the Constitution. Its foundation is on historical untouchability and social discrimination, and not just on economic status…
  • In response to this, Jitan Ram Manjhi hit back at Chirag Paswan. He said that the resignation should not be given to him but to Chirag Paswan because he is not able to understand Santosh Kumar Suman and the issue being raised by him in the larger interest of Dalits.

However, whether there is any direct connection between the threat and the reservation dispute has not been confirmed yet. At present, the main focus of the investigation will be on the source of the threatening letter and its credibility.
