New Delhi: An Indian citizen was among 12 people killed in a massive Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday. The overnight strikes targeted several regions, damaging civilian infrastructure and leaving dozens injured.
Russian Drones, Missiles Target Multiple Regions
According to Zelensky, Russian forces used a large number of jet-powered drones and ballistic missiles during the overnight assault. The attacks caused destruction across multiple areas, including residential buildings and other civilian facilities.
“Overall, 12 people were killed, including an Indian citizen, and dozens more were wounded as a result of the attack,” Zelensky said in a statement.
The Ukrainian president said the strikes affected regions including Kyiv, Odesa, Kherson, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Sumy and Dnipropetrovsk.
Seven Killed In Kyiv Railway Depot Strike
In Kyiv, seven people were killed after a strike hit a railway depot, Zelensky said. Nearly 350 rescuers were deployed in Kyiv and surrounding areas to manage the aftermath of the attack.
In Boryspil, a five-storey apartment building was damaged, killing four people and injuring 13 others, according to Ukrainian officials. Several businesses and civilian structures were also damaged.
Zelensky Calls For More Air Defense Support
Zelensky blamed gaps in Ukraine's air defense system for the scale of casualties and urged international partners to provide additional defense equipment.
He said Russia continues to carry out attacks aimed at causing maximum damage and stressed the need for stronger protection against missile and drone strikes.
Attack Comes After Modi-Putin Meeting
The latest attack came a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Bishkek.
During the meeting, PM Modi called for an end to the Ukraine conflict and said there is no solution on the battlefield, stressing that wars must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
India has maintained that conflicts should be addressed through peaceful negotiations while continuing diplomatic engagement with both Russia and other global partners.
Russia-Ukraine War Continues
The latest strikes add to the growing toll of the Russia-Ukraine war, which has continued to impact civilians and critical infrastructure across Ukraine.
Zelensky said thousands of families in areas like Odessa were left without electricity following the attacks, while emergency teams continued restoration and rescue operations.
