America, China and Israel ahead, but India can also become a global AI power: Alex Karp

Chapel Hill (North Carolina), September 3 (IANS). Alex Karp, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of American software and data analytics company Palantir Technologies, has said that India can emerge as a major Artificial Intelligence (AI) power. He cited the country's technical talent, initiatives taken in the energy sector and its ability to develop advanced AI models as the main reasons for this.

Speaking to IANS, when asked how he sees India's future in the field of AI, he said, “I think India can do very well in this field.”

He said that model development, energy resources and technical expertise are extremely important for the development of AI. You people are taking many creative and practical steps to provide energy.

Karp described energy and technical knowledge as very important for the development of AI. He said the major obstacles facing AI include energy and technical talent. He also said that every country has its own technical capabilities and they should move forward on that basis.

Karp described AI as one of the most important technological advances of the last hundred years. He said that this could perhaps be the most important technological achievement of the last 100 years. However, he also warned that AI can be used for both good and bad purposes.

Karp said it can be used for good as well as bad purposes. Therefore, it is important that experts monitor it. Every country will have to develop independent and indigenous AI systems according to its needs.

“The most interesting thing about this conference is that each country will have to decide how it will develop and regulate its own AI systems,” he said.

Karp said, “How do you control the vets? How do you control the data? How do you make sure it's from your own country?” “Countries have to find answers to these questions.”

Karp said that at present America, China and Israel are among the leading countries in the field of AI. He said, “America, China and Israel are at the forefront at the moment, but it is important for other countries also to develop their AI capabilities and use them properly.”

Karp said organizations using AI need not only computing power, but also systems that can decide which data will be used in which models.

He said, “You need computing capacity, application layer and also decide where to use open model and where to use closed model, so that important information and government secrets are protected.”

Karp said that Palantir's platform can work with AI models developed by various companies. He said his company prefers American technologies, but also supports healthy competition in the commercial market.

He said, “We have to win this competition and American models should be the best. But it is not enough to just say that people should use our models if they are expensive and not even better.”

Karp advised governments to be careful while making rules related to AI. He said that rules are necessary, but they should be made by people who understand this technology well.

Palantir Technologies is an American software company, co-founded by Alex Karp in 2003. The company develops platforms that help government agencies and private companies connect and analyze large-scale data.

Palantir is particularly known for working with US defense and intelligence agencies. Apart from this, the company also provides software solutions to sectors like manufacturing, health services, energy and financial services.
