It has become clear from this study that bacteria have adapted themselves over time in such a way that even the most modern medicines are not able to affect them. This serious situation has forced health experts to think that if the uncontrolled and excessive use of medicines is not stopped in time, then mankind may once again return to the era when even ordinary diseases took the form of epidemics. In this historic and large study conducted by ICMR, the medical data and statistics of about 1.6 lakh serious patients admitted in various major hospitals of the country between April 2022 and 2025 have been analyzed in detail. Going deeper into these data, scientists found that 26,213 of these patients were severely infected with four major dangerous Gram-negative bacteria like E. coli. The most worrying thing was that 61.1% of these infections were 'Carbapenem-resistant'. But the irony is that now bacteria have developed resistance against even these last resort powerful drugs. When the bacteria present in the body are not killed even by strong drugs like carbapenems, doctors are left with very limited options for treatment. This is the reason why the condition of patients starts deteriorating rapidly and in many cases even modern medical technology seems helpless. This situation is a huge alarm not only for the patients admitted in hospitals but for the entire society, because it means that we are gradually moving towards an era where even a common injury or a minor bacterial infection can prove to be fatal. Common infection vs resistant bacteria: Death rate is increasing during treatment. The most scary figure in this report of ICMR is related to the mortality rate of patients. The study found that compared to patients who were infected with normal or sensitive bacteria, the risk of death was several times higher in patients suffering from resistant bacteria. For example, the mortality rate in patients infected with resistant strains of E. coli was 24.4%, compared to 17.3% in cases of common E. coli infections. Similarly, the mortality rate of patients infected with dangerous resistant bacteria like Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) increased to 31.2%, compared to 23.5% in cases of normal infection. To identify the bacteria present in a patient's body and accurately determine its antibiotic sensitivity, culture of blood or other samples has to be developed, which wastes several days of precious time. During this process, initial treatments often prove inaccurate or ineffective, causing the infection to become more severe. As a result, resistant patients spend weeks or months longer in hospital ICUs and wards than those with normal infections. Prolonged treatment not only blocks hospital beds, but the patient and his family have to face immense mental and financial torture. What are the solutions to deal with this serious crisis and the way forward? To deal with this explosive threat of antibiotic resistance, creating new antibiotics is no longer the only solution. Dr. Kamini Walia and other leading medical experts of the country clearly believe that we need to make fundamental changes in our health systems immediately. First, doctors and medical practitioners need to ensure that the culture of indiscriminate prescribing of antibiotics, even for minor viral infections, is curbed. Along with this, it is very important for the general public to be aware that in case of any disease, they should not go and buy antibiotic pills from the medical store without consulting the doctor, nor should they stop the medicines midway before the completion of the course. The second biggest solution is timely and accurate diagnostic testing. If it is known in the initial stages of infection which bacteria are present in the patient's body and which medicine will affect it, then it will be easier for doctors to start the right treatment. Apart from this, strict implementation of hygiene standards in hospitals, strengthening of infection control committees and banning indiscriminate use of antibiotics in animal husbandry and agriculture sector are very important steps in this direction.
