Indian Cricket Team: A crucial meeting was held at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Thursday, September 3, to prepare a roadmap for next year’s ODI World Cup and to discuss Team India’s future plans. Several key officials, including India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20 captain Shreyas Iyer, BCCI secretary Devjit Saikia, Centre of Excellence (CoE) head VVS Laxman, and Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir, were present at the meeting.
The meeting discussed preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup as well as improving Team India’s performance on overseas tours. Particular emphasis was placed on developing a new strategy for the team’s performance in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia). Following the meeting, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia hinted at changes to the Future Tour Program (FTP) and unveiled new plans for tours to SENA countries.
Players will get adequate rest before the big series
Team India’s next overseas tour is to New Zealand, where they will play series in all three formats. However, several key players are currently battling injury issues, which remains a concern for the team management and the board. After the meeting, Devjit Saikia stated that the BCCI will now work to ensure Indian players receive adequate rest before any major series in SENA countries. Saikia stated that the board is also considering giving players additional time to acclimatize to foreign conditions. This could include arranging practice matches before major tours.
He said, “The biggest challenge currently is the players’ busy schedules. We are playing too many matches in a year, which prevents players from getting adequate rest and recovery time. With this in mind, efforts will be made to make some necessary changes in the next FTP. BCCI officials have also been instructed to begin work in this direction soon.”
There was also discussion on the tour of England and Ireland
India recently suffered back-to-back defeats on their tours of England and Ireland. Team India lost both the T20I series in Ireland and England, and lost the ODI series against England 2-1. The important meeting in Mumbai also reviewed the Indian team’s performance on the England-Ireland tour. Board officials and team management discussed areas where the team needs to improve. Saikia stated that the meeting included an assessment of the previous tour’s performance and detailed discussions on strategies for the next year.
Roadmap prepared for 2027 ODI World Cup
The BCCI’s biggest focus at this meeting was preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The board has now begun developing a roadmap for Team India for the next year. According to Saikia, the board’s focus will be on preparing the team for the 2027 ODI World Cup, for which it will work on some preparations as well as providing players with rest. It’s worth noting that the 2027 ODI World Cup will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
