RB Leipzig Confirm Talks to Extend Captain David Raum’s Contract

RB Leipzig are preparing to open contract-extension talks with captain David Raum as the German international enters the final year of his current deal.

RB Leipzig want to secure the long-term future of David Raum, with sporting director Marcel Schäfer confirming that discussions with the left-back and his agent are expected to begin this month.

Raum’s current contract runs until summer 2027, meaning Leipzig face the risk of losing their captain on a free transfer if a new agreement cannot be reached. Schäfer made it clear that the club’s intention is to extend the defender’s contract.

Leipzig Want to Keep Their Captain

“There will definitely be discussions with David and his agent,” Schäfer said, adding that the club is keen to extend Raum’s contract.

The sporting director also stressed that reaching an agreement requires all three parties—the club, the player and his representatives—to find common ground.

Raum has previously shown little urgency about discussing a new deal. He wanted to focus first on the end of the season, the World Cup and then preparations for the new campaign.

The 28-year-old has also stopped short of making a firm commitment to remain in Leipzig beyond his current contract.

Raum Has Become a Key Figure at Leipzig

Raum joined Leipzig from Hoffenheim in 2022 for around €26 million. His first season was difficult, but he gradually established himself as a key player after Marcel Halstenberg’s departure.

His importance to the club increased further last season when he took over the captaincy from long-serving defender Willi Orbán.

He remains Leipzig’s captain for the 2026/27 campaign under new head coach Martín Demichelis. The Bundesliga’s official captain list describes Raum as an important leader whose energy and communication helped him earn the armband.

Impressive Numbers Since Joining Leipzig

Since arriving from Hoffenheim, Raum has made 145 competitive appearances for Leipzig, contributing seven goals and 30 assists. He also helped the club successfully defend the DFB Cup during his first season.

In the Bundesliga alone, he has made 112 appearances, scoring six goals and providing 26 assists, according to German reports.

His attacking contribution from left-back has made him an important part of Leipzig’s system.

Premier League Interest Adds Pressure

Leipzig’s contract situation is complicated by reported interest from England.

Raum has previously been linked with Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, while reports have suggested that English clubs have monitored his situation.

The defender has also previously acknowledged that the Premier League appeals to him. However, no concrete transfer materialised during the most recent transfer window.

That makes the upcoming negotiations particularly important for Leipzig. If Raum does not agree to an extension, the club could eventually face a choice between selling him before his contract expires or risking losing its captain without a transfer fee.

Raum Faces a Major Decision

For now, Leipzig are making their position clear: they want David Raum to stay.

The next step will be negotiations with the player and his representatives over the length and financial terms of a potential new contract.

Raum’s leadership role, experience and attacking qualities make him a valuable asset for Leipzig, but whether he sees his long-term future in Saxony remains unresolved.

With his current deal running until 2027, the coming months could determine whether Raum continues to lead RB Leipzig—or begins preparing for the next chapter of his career.
