Mayawati said that instead of hastily declaring religious places illegal and demolishing them, legal and peaceful means should be found to resolve disputes.
Mayawati, reacting on social media platform X on Saturday, said that the responsibility of a constitutional and secular government is to ensure equal respect and protection of people of all religions and their religious places. He expressed concern over the action being taken against religious places in the state including the mosque of Saharanpur.
What did Mayawati say about mosques?
The BSP supremo alleged that action is being taken to demolish some mosques in Uttar Pradesh by hastily declaring them illegal. He appealed to the government to stop such action and find alternative solutions to the disputes. Mayawati said that the administration should work with sensitivity in matters related to religious places. According to him, in a diverse country like India, maintaining equal respect for religious places of all communities is necessary for social harmony and larger public interest.
He specifically mentioned the religious importance of mosques, saying that for the Muslim community, mosques are an important part of worship and collective prayers. Therefore, while handling such cases, the administration should keep in mind the constitutional values and social traditions of the country.
Questions on demolition of the houses of the accused
Mayawati not only raised questions on the action of demolishing religious places, but also expressed concern over the action of bulldozing the houses of the alleged accused. He said that just because a person is accused, his entire family should not face action. According to Mayawati, if a person is accused of a crime or violation of rules, then proper procedure should be adopted against him under the law.
The BSP leader also appealed to the judiciary to pay serious attention to such cases. He also urged people to maintain peace and social harmony amid any stressful situation.
Why was the action taken against the mosque in Saharanpur?
Mayawati's reaction has come at a time when demolition action has been initiated against the alleged illegal mosque located in the Saharanpur Collectorate complex.
According to the administration, the City Magistrate's Court had on July 17 declared the structure in question illegal and ordered its removal. In the case, a compensation of about Rs 6.41 crore was also ordered on the basis of allegations related to alleged encroachment of government land and its use.
After the appeal filed against this order was rejected, the matter reached the court of the District Judge. According to the administration, on September 4, the District Judge's court also upheld the order of the City Magistrate. After this, the action to remove the concerned structure was started.
