New Delhi: Information has come to light about the arrest of alleged fraudster Manjit Singh Bedi, included in the most wanted list of America’s investigative agency FBI, in India. He is accused of defrauding American government schemes worth about 6 lakh dollars i.e. about Rs 5 crore. America had announced a reward of 1.5 lakh dollars i.e. about Rs 1.25 crore for help in his arrest.
FBI gave information about the arrest
FBI Director Kash Patel gave information about the arrest of Manjit Singh Bedi by posting on social media platform X. He told that it is believed that Bedi had left America and reached India last year. Now the FBI is engaged in the process of bringing him back to America.
According to Patel, Bedi is the fifth big accused to be arrested after the release of the new most wanted list. The accused included in this list are accused of fraud worth billions of dollars.
Alleged manipulation in government food benefits
According to the FBI, Manjit Singh Bedi ran a grocery store in Tacoma, Washington state of America. It is alleged that he misused the cards of the beneficiaries of the government Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program i.e. SNAP.
It has been reported that the benefits received from customers’ cards were converted into cash instead of providing food items. In this process, Bedi allegedly kept a part of the amount for himself. According to the investigation, between March 2024 and June 2025, the US government suffered a loss of about 6 lakh dollars.
Flee abroad despite court order
After the matter came to light, the court had allowed him to live without custody with certain conditions. He was instructed to surrender his passport and remain in Washington. However, it is alleged that he violated these conditions and first crossed the Canadian border and then reached India.
After this the US District Court issued a non-bailable warrant against him. Now after his arrest in India, America is trying to bring him back.
