US F-4 Phantom fighter jet crash : A major accident occurred at Tanagra Air Base, north of Athens, the capital of Greece, when a Phantom F4 fighter jet of the Hellenic Air Force crashed during the 'Athens Flying Week' air show going on there. According to reports, both the pilots on board the plane died in the accident while performing a maneuver at low altitude. Thousands of spectators were present in the air show, but fortunately no one among the spectators got hurt. The accident occurred while performing aerobatics at low altitude, following which a huge plume of smoke rose from the fire.

According to reports, both the pilots were found unconscious at some distance from the crash site. Greece's National Defense Minister Nikos Dendias later confirmed his death and declared three days of mourning for the armed forces from Saturday to Monday.

According to military sources, both the pilots had thousands of hours of flying experience.

The incident occurred during the two-day long 'Athens Flying Week', in which aerial teams from countries across Europe and Asia participate.
