Surendra Singh Chaudhary, a 20-year-old BSc student from Biaora in Rajgarh district of Madhya Pradesh, is known as 'Bittu Tabaahi' on social media. Seeing the poor condition of Ajnar river, instead of just complaining to the administration, he decided to clean the river himself. In this campaign which started from January 26, they entered the river and started removing plastic bottles, bags, moss and accumulated garbage with their hands. Initially some friends accompanied him; But gradually they went away and Bittu continued this work alone.
Bittu spent money from his own pocket to clean the river. Without any major system, government help or special equipment, they spent hours wading into the river and removing garbage. This work also affected his health, but he did not stop the cleanliness campaign. It took him two and a half to three months to clear one ghat. The 'before and after' pictures and videos of his work went viral on social media and the nation learned how much a river environment can be changed with the determination of one young man.
Bittu's efforts were also praised by industrialist Anand Mahindra. After this his story spread throughout the country. However, behind this success a serious question has also emerged – why is the responsibility of keeping the river clean only on a 20-year-old youth? Although Bittu's work is inspiring people today, he has expressed displeasure with citizens who again throw garbage in the river. Their aim is not just to clean a river, but to create public responsibility among people for cleanliness and the environment. A young man, without waiting for the administration, has shown that change can begin not with a big system but with the strong determination of a single person.
