A strange incident between two of Kerala's biggest cricket stars has been fueled by social media. In the video, a clip from the Kerala Cricket League 2026 final presentation ceremony, Sreesanth walks past Sanju Samson, who does not offer a handshake or acknowledge him in any way.
Samson had already been presented with the trophy and was standing on the podium with the trophy and officials when Sreesanth came in from the right with a microphone in his hand. He didn't stop to acknowledge Samson, but walked past him and turned his attention to the dignitaries and Kerala Cricket Association officials who were waiting at the other end of the stage.
The brief moment was enough to get tongues wagging on social media, with many wondering if there was a rift between two of Kerala's biggest cricket stars.
A Brief Moment, A Flood of Speculation For Sreesanth and Sanju Samson
Posts started appearing on social media, with fans zeroing in on the perceived snub and wondering if it was a sign of a deeper rift.
One post read: “Sreesanth and Sanju Samson ignored the handshakes between each other in the KCL final… Any rift?”
Another fan chimed in with: “Again some issues between both.”
But plenty of others were quick to counter the idea that the body language was a sign of a rift. Some highlighted the long-standing friendship between the pair, adding that Sreesanth had given Samson his India debut cap and continually advocated for the wicketkeeper-batsman.
“Sreesanth and Sanju Samson are close friends for a long time…” the post noted, before going on to mention that Sreesanth handed Samson his India debut cap and advocated for him on multiple occasions.
That's a far cry from something as simple as the brief moment captured in the video.
Sreesanth's Public Grievance Over Samson's IPL Journey
The reason for the speculation, however, comes from comments Sreesanth has made in recent months about Samson.
Sreesanth has spoken in detail about what he thinks his role was in getting Samson into the IPL.
Sreesanth claims that he personally brought Samson's name to the notice of Rahul Dravid when the latter was involved in the Rajasthan Royals setup.
Recounting the conversation he'd had with Dravid during an interview with Lallantop, Sreesanth said he spoke of how Samson was a young wicketkeeper-batter who had graduated from the Kolkata Knight Riders academy and was looking for a break.
He even remembered telling Dravid about the six sixes in six consecutive balls Samson had hit him in a local match.
“Rahul bhai looked at me in disbelief,” Sreesanth recalled, before talking of how Dravid had reacted to the ridiculous claim and eventually decided to keep an eye on him.
Sreesanth has also spoken of efforts made to get Kerala cricket players in front of the Rajasthan Royals setup, when opportunities for the players from the state were few and far between.
“Back then, opportunities for Kerala cricketers were mostly confined to teams like CSK or RCB,” he explained.
Arrangements were made, he said, to ensure Kerala players could travel and meet Dravid and present their case to the Rajasthan Royals.
Where the Disagreement Appears to Have Started
The disagreement, from what Sreesanth has said, seems to be sparked off from what he described as Samson's version of the story of how he came to Rajasthan Royals, and the way in which it was being presented.
“Sanju, man, what a story you've put out there!” Sreesanth remarked, taking exception to Samson's version of events, and claiming the process wasn't as simple as he'd made it out to be.
“I think Samson was giving different takes for Hindi and Malayalam audiences,” he added.
These comments have fueled the latest round of speculation that there is a rift between the two. There is, however, documented public disagreement over the version of events surrounding Samson's debut in the IPL, but that doesn't necessarily mean there is a rift between the two.
Did the KCL Moment Really Mean Anything?
This is where the difference between what can be seen and what may only be inferred becomes crucial.
The brief video, where Sreesanth walks past Samson without appearing to acknowledge him, does not give away any motive. It can be assumed, based on the body language of both men, that they didn't have a conversation or exchange pleasantries. But a short snippet from a crowded presentation ceremony cannot indicate whether it was deliberate or not, nor can it indicate if Sreesanth was even aware of Samson's presence.
There has been no confirmed statement from either Sreesanth or Samson that puts the record straight and confirms that there is a rift between the two.
For now, therefore, the “rift” is nothing more than social media speculation.

The fact that there is any question about the relationship between these two players at all is no surprise.
Both occupy very different but equally important spaces in the timeline of Kerala cricket. Sreesanth was one of the state's trailblazers at the international level, while Samson has become one of India's biggest active cricketers and a sporting star for Kerala. The connection they share means even a brief moment between them can be magnified.
If there is really a rift between the two, the fact that the recent comments have been made in public means it will be hard for either of them to walk back the statements. If, however, the KCL presentation video is simply an innocuous moment that appears inordinately larger than life on social media, it's just another reminder of how fast a few seconds of footage can fuel a cricket controversy.
For now, the simplest conclusion based on the evidence is also the right one – the video may have asked questions but it certainly does not confirm a rift between Sreesanth and Sanju Samson.
