The effects of the strong low-pressure created in the Bay of Bengal can now be seen in many parts of the country. Due to this change in weather, heavy rains, thundershowers and strong winds are predicted in many states on September 7. In addition to the plains of North India, hilly areas like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu-Kashmir have been warned of increased risk of landslides with heavy rains. The Meteorological Department has declared red and orange alert in some areas considering the situation. From Delhi-NCR to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and West Bengal, the impact of rain can be seen. Wind gusts of 50 to 70 kmph are also likely at many places.
A well-marked low-pressure system activated over the Bay of Bengal and its vicinity is gradually becoming effective. Due to this, the cyclonic circulation in the lower atmosphere has strengthened. The direct impact of this weather system can be seen in surrounding areas including West Bengal and North Coastal Odisha. Heavy rains are likely to raise water levels in rivers and low-lying areas. In West Bengal Kolkata, Howrah, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Siliguri are likely to experience gusty winds with heavy rain. The maximum temperature in Kolkata is likely to be around 29 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature will be around 25 degrees Celsius. Jharkhand’s Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad and Bokaro are also predicted to experience heavy rain with lightning.
For Delhi-NCR also, the day of September 7 can be important in terms of heavy rains. Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurugram are likely to witness cloudy conditions throughout the day with heavy rain and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph. The rains may cause waterlogging in low-lying areas and increase traffic congestion on the roads. In Uttar Pradesh, several areas including Meerut, Moradabad, Ghaziabad, Agra, Mathura, Bareilly, Kanpur, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Varanasi and Gorakhpur have been warned of heavy rain with wind speed of 60 to 70 kmph. In Bihar, areas including Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur and Purnia are expected to experience heavy rain with lightning and wind speed of 50 to 60 kmph.
The greatest concern is being expressed over the hilly areas. Uttarakhand’s Dehradun, Nainital, Mussoorie, Rishikesh, Chamoli, Uttarkashi and Pithoragarh have been on red alert in view of extremely heavy rains. Heavy rains can increase the risk of landslides in the mountains and make travel difficult on sensitive roads. In Himachal Pradesh, areas like Shimla, Manali, Mandi, Kullu, Kangra, Chamba and Solan are expected to experience heavy rain with gusting winds of 60 to 70 kmph. Jammu, Udhampur, Ramban, Anantnag and Srinagar are also likely to experience moderate to heavy rains in Jammu and Kashmir. Local systems need to be on alert due to landslide warnings in vulnerable hilly areas.
On the other hand, the effect of heavy rain and wind can also be seen in Punjab and Haryana. Areas like Pathankot, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Ambala, Hisar and Karnal are expected to experience rain with wind speed of around 60 kmph. Rain and strong winds are on alert for eastern areas of Rajasthan including Jaipur, Kota, Udaipur, Bharatpur, Ajmer and Alwar. Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Ujjain and Rewa in Madhya Pradesh are likely to experience thunderstorm with wind speed of 50 to 60 kmph and heavy rain. Overall, many parts of the country are likely to experience severe weather on September 7 due to the impact of low pressure. During heavy rains, people are advised to stay away from low-lying areas, river-channels and landslide-prone mountain roads and monitor local meteorological department warnings.
