International Literacy Day: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state government is linking learning with easy, joyful and creative experiences for children in the direction of laying a strong foundation of basic education from the kindergarten level itself.
In this sequence, on International Literacy Day, September 8, ‘Let’s Listen and Tell the Story’ activity will be organized in all the co-located Anganwadi centers and kindergartens and district education and training institutes of the state. Its objective is to develop listening, understanding, expressing one’s point, imagination and creative thinking in children through stories.

In the program issued as per the instructions of Director General School Education Monica Rani, emphasis has been laid on organizing activities at the kindergarten as well as diet level and incorporating local innovations. Strategically, this initiative is an important step towards creating an environment conducive to basic literacy by linking the learning process to children’s experience, communication and creativity at the kindergarten level.
Story will become an easy medium of learning
In co-located Anganwadi centers and kindergartens, ‘Let’s Listen and Tell the Story’ activity will be conducted in the story session after the welcome time and independent play activity as per the day plan of the Kindergarten Handbook. Linking it to the social and emotional development of children, it will be organized in story time sessions. The story will be selected according to the age of the children from the Big Book or local story available at the state level.
The story will be such that children can get a moral message. While narrating the story, keeping in mind the imagination and creative thinking of the children, closed and open ended questions related to the story will be asked and children will be encouraged to give their answers.
Special event will be held at diet level also
‘Let’s listen and tell the story’ activity will also be organized in the district education and training institutes. Keeping in mind the local needs, instructions have been given to include innovative efforts in it. Anganwadi workers, academic resource persons, children and parents of nearby kindergartens can also be invited to the program.
At the DIET level, activities like story reading session, discussion and question answer session with children after the story and story reading with the participation of parents, Anganwadi workers and academic resource persons are proposed. Emphasis has also been laid on encouraging children to make drawings inspired by the story by providing paper and colors and appreciating them by displaying their drawings.
Creative expression will move forward through story
After the activity, the children in the kindergarten are instructed to make a picture based on the story, express their views about the picture and provide opportunities for creative expression related to the story. Emphasis has also been laid on safeguarding the material prepared by children and encouraging their talent. To ensure activities in all the kindergartens, participation of the headmaster, Anganwadi workers and concerned teaching assistants will be ensured.
