New Delhi. Congress leader Abhishek Dutt has raised questions on the action of Delhi government after the Satya Niketan accident. He accused the BJP government of Delhi and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta of pressure from the building mafia and demanded action against the Commissioner and other officials under Section 56J. The Congress leader said, “There is a lot of pressure on the BJP government from the building mafia not to take strict action against the officers. Mere suspension does not help. These officers will be back on their jobs in two months and will be in better positions. All these corrupt officers, including the Commissioner, should be suspended from their jobs under Section 56J. Yesterday, people from his own party were demanding the removal of the Commissioner for misleading the people of Delhi.”
He further said that the government should immediately fire Commissioner DC under Section 56J so that next time no one comes under pressure from any officer, leader or builder and allows such a big accident to happen. Secondly, when Congress was in power in the country in 1984, in 1985 the then government had brought a huge law for Delhi under Section 466A. Under this, there was a provision to register criminal cases against any person who did illegal construction in Delhi and send him to jail.
The Congress leader said that Section 466A has been removed from the Public Trust Bill brought by the Central Government, which means that no criminal case can be made against those people. This government took such a big step to provide protection to builders. If they had made equal efforts to save the buildings of Delhi, such accidents would not have happened in Delhi. Government data says that at present only 19 buildings are dangerous in Delhi. That means there is pressure on the officials from builders, politicians and people from their departments, so that they do not identify dangerous buildings. There should be a door to door survey in Delhi immediately, the list of all the dangerous buildings should be put on the website of the Municipal Corporation, so that any person who wants to come to Delhi and rent these houses can go and see whether this building is dangerous or not.
He further said that electricity and water connections of all the buildings identified as dangerous should be cut off until they get them repaired. Unless our technical surveyor gives the green signal, people should not be allowed to live there. This problem is not limited to hostels only, it is also related to transportation in Delhi. When I talk to students in Delhi, they say that there are no buses in Delhi. Even if we go and stay somewhere else, we do not have the transportation system here. Delhi Metro is very expensive, so students look for houses near colleges. Bharatiya Janata Party itself had promised to build hostels in Delhi University, but they did not build hostels.
