If on this Ganesh Chaturthi you want to make modak for Bappa at home instead of bringing sweets from the market, then this easy recipe will help you.
In this recipe, the outer part of modak will be prepared from rice flour, while the inside will have a tasty filling of coconut, jaggery and dry fruits. The special thing is that not much material will be required to make it.
What is required to make Modak?
- 1 tbsp ghee
- 1 cup dry grated coconut
- half cup grated jaggery
- half teaspoon cardamom powder
- some chopped cashews
- some chopped pistachios
- a pinch of nutmeg powder
- For outer layer:
- 1 cup water
- 1¼ cups fine rice flour
- a pinch of salt
- Melted ghee as required
How to make Modak?
- Heat one tablespoon ghee in a pan. Now add dry coconut to it and fry it lightly. After this add jaggery, cardamom powder, chopped cashews, pistachios and a pinch of nutmeg. Mix everything well on low flame and cook for some time. Take care that the mixture does not dry out or burn too much. Keep the prepared filling aside.
- Now heat a cup of water in a vessel and add a pinch of salt in it. When the water becomes hot, add rice flour to it and mix well. Keep stirring the mixture, so that lumps do not form in it.
- When the mixture cools down a bit, knead it well with hands. The dough should be soft and smooth. Keep it covered with a cloth for some time, so that the dough does not dry.
- Now take the modak mold and apply a small amount of rice flour in it and spread it well all around. Make a space in the middle and fill the prepared coconut-jaggery filling. Apply a layer of dough on top of it and close the mold.
- Beautifully shaped modak will be ready as soon as you open the mould. Make all the modaks in the same manner. Prepared modak can be made soft and tasty by steaming it. Let them cool down a bit before offering them.
What things to keep in mind
- While making modak, keep in mind that do not overcook the rice flour.
- Apart from this, avoid over-roasting coconut and jaggery. Due to this the taste may get spoiled.
- Avoid overcooking modak in steam.
