Jharkhand High Court reduced the four-year sentence given to a man by the Sessions Court on charges of attempt to rape to eight months. The Sessions Court of East Singhbhum district had given its verdict on July 25. On Monday, the High Court amended the lower court order. According to the report of Times of India, in its decision, the High Court said that entering a woman's house at night and attempting to lift her clothes will not be considered an attempt to rape.
The court clarified the difference between insulting the dignity of a woman and attempt to rape. Said that it may not be an attempt to rape, but a crime. According to the report, on August 31, Justice Pradeep Kumar Srivastava heard an appeal.

The court said that an act can be considered an attempt to rape only when it is close to the commission of the rape. The evidence in this case does not appear to establish the use of criminal force intended to outrage the dignity of a woman in the form of attempted rape. The High Court upheld the man's conviction for using criminal force with intent to outrage the modesty of a woman.

This case is from East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand. The incident was carried out on the night of 26 December 1999. A day later, on 27th December, the accused was arrested. The police filed a charge sheet against him on charges of attempt to rape. On July 25, the Sessions Court of East Singhbhum district sentenced the man to four years of rigorous imprisonment for attempted rape. He challenged the decision of the lower court in the High Court. Now the High Court reduced his sentence to 8 months.
