'World EV Day' is being celebrated all over the world on Wednesday and due to the focus towards adopting clean energy, electric vehicles are increasing rapidly in India too and till now more than one crore EV vehicles have been sold in the country and this market has grown at an annual growth rate of 79 percent in the last 12 years.
On World EV Day, Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said on social media 'X' that India's electric mobility journey reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi's transformative vision of a cleaner, greener and more self-reliant future. He further said in the post that with more than 1.01 crore electric vehicles sold, the pace of adoption of electric mobility is increasing across the country.
Schemes like 'PM e-Drive' of the Central Government are playing an important role in increasing the number of EVs in the country. Under this scheme, subsidy has been given so far on 28.63 lakh electric vehicles. This includes more than 25.88 lakh electric two-wheelers, 2.75 lakh electric three-wheelers and 53 e-trucks.
The Union Minister wrote in his post, “The Ministry of Heavy Industries is taking this transformation forward through initiatives like PM e-Drive. Under this initiative, so far 28.63 lakh EVs have been supported, which includes more than 25.88 lakh electric two-wheelers and 2.75 lakh electric three-wheelers.”
According to the ministry, a total of 1,01,58,449 units of vehicles have been sold in the country from the financial year 2011-12 to September 2026. In the financial year 2025-26 alone, 25,45,622 units were sold, which is the largest figure ever recorded in a single year.
Concluding the post, the Union Minister said that as we move towards 'Developed India 2047', the Ministry of Heavy Industries is committed to strengthening India's EV ecosystem, promoting clean mobility and building a globally competitive, technology-based automotive industry.
