New Delhi. The ongoing controversy regarding the hotel arrangements of the Indian cricket team before the start of the Asian Games 2026 is almost over. Indian men's and women's cricket teams will not get the facility of five-star hotels this time like during foreign tours. Despite this, the Board of Control for Cricket in India i.e. BCCI has expressed satisfaction with the arrangements made by the organizers. BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla has clarified that both the Indian teams will stay in the accommodation decided by the organizers of the Asian Games. The priority of the Board is to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for the players and the current arrangement has been accepted from this perspective.
In fact, Indian cricketers are usually accommodated in five-star hotels with better facilities on foreign tours. In such a situation, when it came to light that five-star hotels were not available for the Asian Games to be held in Nagoya, Japan, questions were raised whether BCCI would make separate arrangements for its players. The limited availability of top-class hotels in Nagoya was cited as a major reason for this entire issue. The organizers also face the challenge of accommodating a large number of players and officials.
Initially there was also discussion that if the Indian team did not like the designated hotel, then alternative arrangements could be made for the players in cities like Tokyo or Osaka. But this option was not considered practical because the long distance from the match and practice venue could create problems for the players. In such a situation, BCCI, in coordination with the organizers, decided to accept the same system which has been prepared for the Asian Games.
BCCI's biggest concern was not just about the star rating of the hotel but about the comfort and privacy of the players. According to reports, emphasis has been laid on providing separate rooms to the players. This means that despite there not being a five-star hotel, the players of the team will get separate rooms so that there is no problem in rest and preparation. BCCI had also obtained information about the arrangements through photographs and videos of the hotel.
Apart from the hotel, BCCI was also concerned about sports facilities. Questions were raised especially regarding the quality of the field, pitch and arrangements like dressing room. Later, after inspection and discussion, a satisfactory situation regarding these arrangements also emerged. That is, the board has clearly indicated that safe accommodation, good sports facilities and easy access to the match venue are more important for the team than a five-star hotel.
The Asian Games 2026 is to be held in the Aichi Nagoya region of Japan from September 19 to October 4. Cricket competition will also be a part of this big sporting event and India has fielded strong teams in both men's and women's categories. The men's team will be captained by Shreyas Iyer while there are high expectations of a medal from the Indian team.
One thing is clear from this whole incident that this time instead of making the facility of five-star hotel a prestige issue, BCCI has given priority to the practical needs related to the preparation and competition of the players. Following the arrangements made by the organisers, Team India will now focus its full attention on performing on the field and winning medals in the Asian Games.
