Anurag Kashyap's dream to start his career was not to become a filmmaker, but to become a scientist. But after watching the Italian classic 'Bicycle Thieves' at a film festival during his college days, his outlook towards cinema changed. This film impressed him so much that he chose film production as his future.

In 1993, Anurag Kashyap came to Mumbai with about five thousand rupees. But soon he ran out of money and faced the problem of accommodation. He spent many nights on the streets of Mumbai, sometimes sleeping on Juhu beach and sometimes hiding in college students' hostels. On some occasions, there was even a situation of sleeping on the footpath by paying just Rs 6.
During the struggle in Mumbai, Anurag Kashyap also became associated with Prithvi Theatre. He did not shy away from doing small jobs there in order to learn the work and look for opportunities. He used to clean the theater and also continued writing scripts. In the initial phase, he also wrote for some TV projects without fees. After several years of struggle, his fortunes took a new turn in 1998. Actor Manoj Bajpayee recognized his talent and forwarded his name to director Ram Gopal Varma. After this Anurag Kashyap got the opportunity to be associated with the writing of the film 'Satya'.
