Pakistan is troubled by the attack by Houthi rebels on Saudi Arabia amid the increasing conflict in the Middle East. After 73 people were injured in this attack, Saudi Arabia responded with an airstrike in Yemen. Following this incident, Pakistan has asked Iran to influence the Houthi rebels and stop them from attacking Saudi Arabia, citing its defense agreement with Saudi Arabia.
Pakistan has taken the attack on Saudi Arabia seriously because there is a defense agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Pakistan has given the message that if attacks on Saudi Arabia by Houthi rebels continue, the situation may become more serious. Earlier too, Iran has been accused of supporting Houthi rebels. Therefore, Pakistan has directly demanded that Iran use its influence to control the Houthis.
Meanwhile, the security situation in the Red Sea area has become more serious after the capture of Mocha city of Yemen by Houthis. Mocha is a geographically important city near the Red Sea, and its control has the potential to give the Houthis access to the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait. The Bab-el-Mandeb is an important route for international maritime trade that connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. Therefore, there are fears that fighting in the area will affect shipping and maritime trade.
As Saudi Arabia responds to the Houthi offensive in Yemen with airstrikes, tensions between Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the Houthi rebels are likely to escalate further. As soon as Pakistan mentioned the defense agreement with Saudi Arabia, the possibility of this fight having a bigger impact has also come to the fore.
