Nam A Bank secures $30M from Proparco for green finance

The agreement was signed at the French Development Agency (AFD)’s office in Hanoi. The financing will support projects in renewable energy, energy efficiency, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and green buildings.

The agreement follows a memorandum of understanding signed by the two sides in Paris in March 2026 and Proparco’s completion of its appraisal, due diligence and Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures for Nam A Bank.

According to the bank, the financing is the first concrete outcome of its “Green Finance Community” initiative, launched at the Vietnam International Financial Center (VIFC) in Ho Chi Minh City.

Vo Hoang Hai, deputy general director of Nam A Bank, said the facility reflected Proparco’s confidence in the bank’s governance capabilities and would support its strategy of digitalization and green development.

“The $30 million financing facility stands as a testament to the trust placed by Europe’s leading development finance institution in our bank’s governance capacity,” Hai said.

“Nam A Bank remains steadfast in executing its strategy anchored on the twin pillars of ‘Digitalization and Greening’ to transform international financial resources into practical, reasonably priced credit solutions. This empowers our clients—especially SMEs, women-led enterprises, and sustainable agriculture models—to enhance their competitiveness and achieve market breakthroughs.”

Jean-Benoit Du Chalard, Proparco’s regional director for North and Southeast Asia, said the partnership was expected to support Vietnam’s emissions reduction efforts.

“We are delighted to announce this high-impact partnership, signed today in Vietnam. This credit facility, dedicated 100% to climate objectives, reflects our shared ambition to tackle climate change in a country that is particularly vulnerable to climate hazards,” he said.

The signing took place during activities organized Sept. 8-9 by AFD and Proparco in collaboration with environmental management consultancy SLR Consulting.

The program included training for Vietnamese financial institutions on managing environmental, social and climate risks in line with international frameworks, including the IFC Performance Standards and the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Safeguard Policies.

Nam A Bank said applying international environmental and social standards would strengthen its project appraisal capabilities and support the allocation of financing to green projects.

The bank plans to use the partnership to expand access to international green capital and global financial partners. Financing will target small and medium-sized enterprises, women-led businesses, clean energy projects, green transition initiatives and digital transformation linked to reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
