Apple has finally entered the foldable smartphone market with the launch of its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo. However, Samsung was quick to remind Apple that it has been in the foldable business for years, taking a series of sarcastic digs at its biggest rival on social media.
Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo at its “Surprise and Shine” event on September 9. The device marks one of the biggest changes to the iPhone lineup in years and opens into a 7.6-inch display, while featuring a 5.4-inch outer screen when folded. It starts at ₹2,99,900 in India.
Samsung says ‘so far, so same’
Samsung Mobile US did not wait long to react to Apple’s announcements. As Apple introduced the iPhone 18 Pro, Samsung posted on X, “So far, so same,” along with the hashtag #ItsTimeToSwitch.
The South Korean tech giant later took another swipe at Apple’s foldable plans, writing, “Making us wait? Fine. We’ll be over here, folding 3 ways.” The post was a clear reference to Samsung’s experience with foldable smartphones and its three-panel Galaxy Z TriFold.
But Samsung saved its sharpest dig for the moment Apple finally unveiled the iPhone Duo.
‘Reheating our leftovers’
Soon after the foldable iPhone was revealed, Samsung Mobile US posted: “Let us know when you’re done reheating our leftovers.”
The post took a direct shot at Apple for entering a segment that Samsung helped establish years ago. Samsung launched its first Galaxy Fold in 2019 and has since released multiple generations of foldable smartphones.
Samsung also mocked the design of Apple’s new device, writing, “It’s feeling very familiar. Is this a Sims sequel…”
The messaging was part of a broader campaign aimed at highlighting Samsung’s head start in the foldable smartphone segment.
Apple’s first foldable iPhone
Despite Samsung’s trolling, the iPhone Duo represents a major new product category for Apple.
According to Apple, the device has a 7.6-inch inner display when unfolded and a 5.4-inch outer display when closed. Apple says it is the thinnest iPhone ever when opened and features a precision hinge designed for durability.
The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip and supports multitasking on its larger internal display. It is available in Star White and Night Sky, with storage options ranging from 256GB to 2TB.
In India, pre-orders will begin on October 16, while sales will start on October 23. The starting price is ₹2,99,900.
Samsung vs Apple rivalry heats up
Samsung’s latest social media campaign shows that Apple’s entry into foldables has intensified the rivalry between the two smartphone giants.
While Samsung has years of experience in the segment, Apple is betting on its massive ecosystem and customer base to make foldable iPhones more mainstream. Analysts expect Apple’s entry to significantly reshape competition in the foldable market.
