Judge Judy is stepping away from on-camera work after more than three decades of ruling over small-claims disputes on television. The 83-year-old TV personality says she’s ready for a quieter chapter, though she’ll remain involved in TV behind the scenes.
According to PEOPLE, Judith Sheindlinbetter known as Judge Judy, will leave on-camera work after Judy Justice ends its run on Prime Video in October. Discussing her plans, she said, “I have a lot of other things of interest.” The attorney reportedly listed new priorities like afternoon naps, family time, and developing Judyverse, an adult animated series inspired by viral AI-generated Baby Judge Judy videos.
“I don’t want to do hair and makeup anymore, but I still want my message to get out there,” the 83-year-old told PEOPLE.
While she is retiring from on-camera work, she is now preparing to back another syndicated court show, led by her own son, Adam Levy.
Why Judge Judy believes son Adam Levy is ready to take over the bench
Sheindlin is producing Adam’s Law, a new syndicated court show starring Adam Levy, which premieres on September 14. Levy earned notable television experience by co-starring on Prime Video’s panel series Tribunal Justice for three seasons.
The 58-year-old has also spent years working in the legal field, serving two terms as district attorney in Putnam County, New York. Sheindlin believes that experience has prepared him to lead his own show.
“There aren’t a lot of people who can carry a half hour on their own unscripted,” the 83-year-old told PEOPLE. “He has what it takes.”
Sheindlin admitted that Levy was not ready for the role several years ago. “Maybe eight years ago he wasn’t ready. He’s ready now,” she said.
Sheindlin’s television career began with Judge Judy in 1996. The show ran for 25 seasons. She launched Judy Justice in 2021, continuing her courtroom television legacy while earning further recognition. The CBS special Judge Judy: Unfiltered, Unforgettable will celebrate Sheindlin’s television career on September 22.
