The ship, named Virgo Transport 8, was heading from Surabaya in East Java province to Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan province on Borneo island.

According to the Search and Rescue Office in Banjarmasin, they had received information that the ship’s communication system had stopped working during the voyage. After this, rescue agencies started the search by finding the last known location of the ship. According to officials, the last known position of the ship was in the Java Sea. This place is said to be about 148 kilometers away from a pier in Banjarmasin.
