Blackpool remains one of Britain’s most iconic traditional seaside resorts, offering far more than its well-known reputation for amusement arcades, fish and chips, and lively nights out might suggest. However, those seeking a quieter stretch of coastline nearby may well be delighted by what the neighbouring town of Fleetwood has to offer.
Situated a mere seven miles from Blackpool, Fleetwood couldn’t be more different from the beaches of the celebrated Lancashire hotspot. While its famous neighbour is renowned for its bustling entertainment and nightlife scene, Fleetwood delivers a far more serene alternative, boasting a proud maritime heritage, a charming seafront and a distinctly relaxed atmosphere. Among Fleetwood’s standout attractions is its seafront promenade, which offers sweeping views across the Irish Sea and towards Morecambe Bay.
The shoreline is ideal for leisurely walks and cycling trips, with the promenade stretching all the way to the neighbouring town of Cleveleys.
There is plenty to explore in Fleetwood, from the Fleetwood Museum and its traditional market through to the marina, harbour and coastal wildlife areas.
Visitors can also hop aboard the passenger ferry crossing the River Wyre to Knott End-on-Sea, offering a scenic alternative to navigating around the estuary by road. The town was founded as a planned Victorian community and later evolved into a major fishing port, with its seafaring history remaining central to Fleetwood’s identity to this day.
Its museum chronicles the town’s past and fishing customs, while Fleetwood Market remains a draw for visitors, featuring over 200 stalls and retaining much of its genuine Lancashire character.
In stark contrast to its well-known coastal neighbour, holidaymakers are virtually absent, with one reviewer describing it as a “nice quiet beach” and another admitting they were “amazed” at how there is “nothing there”.

Fleetwood is a seaside town situated within the Borough of Wyre, also in Lancashire, England, with a population of approximately 26,000.
The town expanded considerably during the first half of the 20th century, driven by the growth of the fishing industry and passenger ferry services to the Isle of Man.
It also boasts a notable distinction: the town’s largest employer is Lofthouse of Fleetwood, the manufacturer of the internationally renowned lozenge Fisherman’s Friend, which is distributed worldwide.
Multiple visitors have shared their views about the beach on TripAdvisor. One noted: “Nice quiet beach and promenade. Not a great deal to do but enough for a nice stroll and some fish and chips on way home.”
One visitor wrote: “Apart from a couple of cafes, there is literally nothing to do. We had a nice walk that was very peaceful. Just amazed at how there really is nothing there.”
A separate admirer of the stretch of coastline noted that it is “cleaner” and “more quiet” than Blackpool.
They commented: “I live in Blackpool and I always travel up to Fleetwood to go on their beach in the summer. More quiet and cleaner than Blackpool and it’s more natural.
“You also have the boating nearby so you can take the kids crabbing as well as going to the little cafes dotted around the seafront.”
