SaudiArabia : Saudi Arabia has discovered about 110 million tonnes of raw mineral reserves containing uranium and other rare minerals in the Medina area. Saudi government television has given this information quoting the kingdom’s Energy Minister Prince Abdul Aziz bin Salman.

During the International Atomic Energy Agency conference in Vienna, Prince Abdul Aziz bin Salman said that this discovery has come to light on the basis of exploration and geological studies conducted in the Jabal Said area. According to him, there is also a potential amount of uranium present here along with high concentration of rare elements. He said that exploration and geological studies conducted in the Jabal Saeed project of Medina have revealed an estimate of about 110 million tonnes of mineral reserves. Rare earth minerals, especially heavy elements, have been found in high concentrations in it. Along with this, it is said that probable quantity of uranium is also present. The Saudi minister said that his country wants to make better use of its diverse energy and mineral resources. Diversifying resources has become necessary to promote economic growth and ensure supply security. He also said that Saudi Arabia is strengthening its position as an active participant in global energy markets.

Prince Abdul Aziz also mentioned the recent agreement with the US regarding Saudi Arabia’s civilian nuclear program. He said that this agreement will be within the scope of 123 agreements, special voluntary safeguard arrangements and monitoring of the International Atomic Energy Agency. On concerns raised about Saudi Arabia’s nuclear ambitions, he clarified that the kingdom does not want to develop its nuclear program in isolation from the international community. He said that no attempt is being made to run a nuclear program either through covert activities or through facilities hidden within the mountains. He said that Saudi Arabia is adopting a policy based on transparency, clarity and international cooperation. Through this statement, the state has given the message of keeping its nuclear program within the ambit of international monitoring and cooperation.
