The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab on Tuesday accused the Congress of exploiting tragedies for political gains while avoiding questions about its record, particularly the 1984 Sikh massacre.
The AAP said the death of Gulzar Singh was tragic and deserved a thorough investigation, but alleged that Congress leaders were attempting to use the family's grief for political purposes. The party said the investigation should be allowed to proceed and the law should take its course.
AAP Punjab President and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora said Punjab had not forgotten the events of 1984 and alleged that Congress leaders continued to avoid accountability.
“Punjab has not forgotten 1984, and it will not forgive Congress. 42 years on, the pain is just as real,” Arora said.
Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema questioned why the Congress continued to avoid answering questions related to the 1984 Sikh massacre.
“Why is the Congress still refusing to answer about the 1984 Sikh massacre even today? Why the fear about 1984 in Congress?” he said.
Minister Dr Baljit Kaur alleged that Congress leaders became defensive when questioned about Kamal Nath and 1984. Dr Balbir Singh similarly questioned why Sachin Pilot and Punjab Congress leader Raja Warring reacted strongly when the issue was raised.
Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal said Punjab deserved answers rather than silence, arguing that four decades had passed but the pain of those affected remained.
Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO said 1984 remained a painful memory for families across generations and questioned why Congress leaders were still unwilling to confront questions of accountability.
Hardeep Singh Mundian and Cabinet Minister Lal Chand Khataruchak also questioned the Congress leadership over its response to the 1984 massacre, saying the passage of 42 years had not erased the demand for accountability.
Minister Dr Ravjot Singh said Punjab continued to carry the wounds of 1984 and alleged that Congress leaders avoided questions about responsibility for the violence.
The AAP also accused the Congress of having a record linked to drugs and gangsterism in Punjab and said the Bhagwant Mann government was taking action against both issues.
The party alleged that Congress leaders were attempting to turn every tragedy into a political campaign and said political parties should focus on justice for grieving families rather than political slogans.
AAP leaders maintained that the people of Punjab had not forgotten 1984 and would continue to seek answers on the issue.
