UCC Controversy: The politics of the country has once again heated up regarding the Uniform Civil Code i.e. UCC. After Home Minister Amit Shah's announcement of implementing UCC in all 21 NDA ruled states before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, now Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind President Maulana Arshad Madani has expressed strong objection to it. Madani has raised the question whether the country will be run according to the Constitution or on the basis of the ideological agenda of any political party. He says that through UCC, the rights related to religious and personal laws given to Muslims under the Constitution will be affected.

Arshad Madani clearly said that the Muslim community cannot compromise with its religion and religious laws. He claimed that many provisions of Muslim personal law are based on religious texts and would oppose bringing them under the ambit of the Uniform Civil Code. He raised the question that when Scheduled Tribes can be exempted from UCC under the provisions of the Constitution, why cannot the religious freedom enjoyed by Muslims under Articles 25 and 26 of the Constitution be respected?

Giving the example of laws related to cow slaughter, he said that if there is no uniform law on this issue in the country, then why is there so much emphasis on uniformity in the matter of religious and personal laws. Madani also informed that Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has approached the High Court regarding the UCC implemented in Uttarakhand. According to him, several hearings have taken place in this matter so far and senior advocate Kapil Sibal and other lawyers have appeared in the court on behalf of the organization.
On the other hand, the central government's argument regarding UCC is that its objective is to establish a uniform legal system in civil matters like marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption. UCC is applicable in Uttarakhand, while the process of legislation regarding this has also progressed in Gujarat and Assam.

In such a situation, the debate regarding UCC is no longer limited to just the Center and the Opposition. Different opinions are emerging on this issue among different communities, organizations and even among the allies of NDA. At present, Arshad Madani's protest and the government's resolve to implement UCC are face to face. Further court decisions and the legislative process taking place in individual states will be important in determining the direction of this issue.
