Speaking to news agency IANS during 'Semicon India 2026' organized in the national capital, the Union Minister said, “Be it materials, machinery, new fab plants, ATMP units, design or talent development, our effort is to develop all these in India.”
He said that under 'Semicon 2.0', India's semiconductor industry will move forward on six major pillars.
SEMICON 2.0 has six pillars – design, machinery and materials, setting up more fab units, further strengthening the ATMP/OCAT industry, research and development (R&D) and talent development.
Ashwini Vaishnav further added, “At SEMICON 1.0, we had a large number of startups who were looking at how chip designing could be done. We had good success in this. More than 105 startups participated in it and about 20 of them also got venture capital funding of around Rs 800 crore. This was just the beginning.”
Apart from this, during this time Electronics and Information Technology Secretary S. Speaking to IANS, Krishnan said that this year's event is much bigger than last year.
He said, “Around 40,000 delegates have registered. More than 600 companies are participating in the exhibition. Representatives from 52 countries are participating and more than 300 companies participating in the exhibition are foreign. This shows how much confidence the world has in India as a destination for semiconductor manufacturing.”
According to the government, the duration of projects supported under Semicon 2.0 will normally be six years, while the scheme will initially be open for applications for three years.
India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) will be the nodal agency of this scheme. It will invite applications, conduct technical and financial appraisal, recommend selected applicants and monitor the implementation of the projects.
A mid-term review will also be conducted after three years or as per the need, to assess the impact of the scheme and consider its modification or expansion, if necessary.
Meanwhile, the government has officially notified all the six pillars of the Semicon 2.0 plan. This is being considered an important step towards strengthening India's semiconductor design and manufacturing capabilities.
The scheme builds on the achievements of the Semicon India program launched earlier and will provide financial and infrastructure support to the entire semiconductor value chain including chip design, fabrication, packaging, equipment, materials, R&D and talent development.
