According to some rumors, it is believed that when a snake completes 100 years of its life, a divine gem appears on its hood, which is called Nagamani in common language.
Whereas according to some texts, it is believed that only Nagraj Takshak and Nagraj Vasuki have snake gems on their heads i.e. their hoods. It has been claimed for centuries that King Vikramaditya had one such real Nagamani. But where did that gem disappear after his death? Is he still buried under a mysterious temple in Ujjain whose doors open only for 24 hours in a year? This is the complete story of King Chandragupta Vikramaditya, Nagamani and the mysterious Nagchandreshwar Temple of Ujjain.
About 10,600 years ago, India's holy land Ujjain was ruled by the great Chakravarti emperor Chandragupta II Vikramaditya of the Gupta dynasty. King Vikramaditya was not only known for his justice and bravery but he was also a master of Tantra Vidya and supernatural achievements. Once upon a time, the underworld, Nagalok, was attacked by some very powerful demon or illusory power. The entire species of snakes was in danger. When Nagraj, the king of snakes, came to know about the bravery of King Vikramaditya on earth, he himself took human form and came to the court of King Vikramaditya to ask for help. The just king Vikramaditya immediately decided to help Nagaraj.
With the help of his magical powers, he reached the underworld with the king. There King Vikramaditya completely destroyed that terrible menace and the demon with his divine sword. Nagraj had tears in his eyes after seeing this selfless bravery in saving Naglok from a major destruction. Expressing his gratitude, King Nag took out from his hood the brightest and most divine snake gem in the universe and presented it as a gift to King Vikramaditya. King Vikramaditya returned to his cultural capital Ujjain with that Nagamani. The brilliance of this Nagamani was so divine that its influence changed the fate of the entire Malwa region.
As soon as this gem was placed in the royal treasury of Ujjain, famine, starvation and diseases ended forever in the entire kingdom. People started living a happy life and the people became so safe that no person in the entire state died due to snake bite or any kind of poison. According to some beliefs, King Vikramaditya had received a divine throne from Devraj Indra. The king had got that snake gem embedded in a secret part of the same throne. Due to which the entire palace kept shining like the sun even in the darkness of the night. Time passed and the last days of King Vikramaditya came near. He was a very visionary king.
They knew that this Nagamani was not an ordinary gem, but an extremely powerful divine object. The future kings coming after him will not be able to handle its (music) brilliance and the increasing greed of humans to acquire this gem (music) can bring great destruction. Therefore, before leaving for heaven, he secretly buried that Naagmani and the divine treasure of his kingdom in an extremely deep and impenetrable secret cellar under the ground of Mahakal forest of Ujjain. After the departure of King Vikramaditya, the Gupta Empire gradually started weakening.
For the next 550 years, the land of Ujjain witnessed heavy bloodshed, foreign invasions and the ups and downs of many dynasties. The cruel Huns who came from the north-west attacked, who were later repulsed by King Yashodharman. After this, the influence of Emperor Harshvardhan of Kannauj remained here. Between the 8th and 10th centuries, there were centuries of fierce wars between the Gurjara Pratihara kings of the north and the Rashtrakuta kings of the south for the capture of Ujjain. In this long turmoil, the secret cellar of King Vikramaditya and the Nagamani remained buried under the ground in the pages of history. Around 1050 AD i.e. in the 11th century, another great and glorious king sat on the throne of Malwa, whose name was Raja Bhoj of Parmar dynasty.
Raja Bhoj himself was born in Ujjain. He was not only a great warrior but also a great scholar of architecture, astrology and Tantra Shastras. Raja Bhoj, through his secret ancient calculations and study of texts, came to know the secret that just below a special place inside the Mahakal forest, the same ancient secret crypt and Nagamani of Emperor Vikramaditya is buried. Raja Bhoj was a very religious and dignified man. He did not try to dig out the snake stone for his personal greed. They knew that the heritage belonged to Naglok.
So he made a wonderful plan to secure that place forever. Raja Bhoj created a unique combination of science and ancient temple architecture. He got the Mahakaleshwar area prepared as a grand three-storey three-tier temple. The actual Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga was installed on the ground floor. Omkareshwar Mahadev was established on the second floor just above it. Raja Bhoj first built the sanctum sanctorum of Shri Nagchanshwar temple on the third and uppermost floor, exactly above the same secret basement.
Raja Bhoj ordered an extremely rare and ancient shining stone idol from Nepal to make this temple more supernatural. In this unique idol, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati are not seated on a lotus seat but on Shesh Shaiya, the seat of Nagaraj Takshak with 10 hoods spread. Just behind this was the secret passage that led to Vikramaditya's basement below. Raja Bhoj had consecrated this entire temple and the idol in such a way that Nagraj Takshak himself could take charge of the spiritual protection of the treasure hidden below and the Nagamani.
According to Sanatan beliefs, Nagraj Takshak still resides invisible i.e. secretly under that third floor and is protecting that secret secret of Vikramaditya. To ensure that no human being disturbs his solitude and devotion to God, the doors of this temple are kept completely closed with heavy iron locks for 364 days of the year. It is strictly prohibited for any priest or common man to go there. Only once in a year, on the day of Nag Panchami in the month of Sawan, the doors of this temple are opened for full 24 hours.
It is believed that on this day, Nagraj Takshak himself gives darshan to the devotees and gives permission for special Trikal puja of Lord Shiva. By just setting foot here on this one day, the most dreadful Sarp Dosh and Kaal Sarp Dosh of the horoscope are erased forever. Thus, even though the dynasties were different and there was a distance of centuries in time.
