Amidst the ongoing controversy in Trinamool Congress regarding the name and symbol of the party, the party has sent separate lists of new alternative names and symbols to the Election Commission on behalf of the faction of Mamata Banerjee and rebel Ritabrata Banerjee. The Election Commission has currently frozen the election symbol and name due to the dispute over the claims of both the parties on the party's name 'All India Trinamool Congress' and the symbol 'Two flowers on the grass'. The Election Commission asked both the parties to use the new name and new symbol. After this, both the parties submitted their respective names and symbols to the Election Commission.
After the order of the Election Commission, now both the groups will contest the by-elections with different names and new election symbols. This system will remain in force until the final settlement of the dispute. According to media reports, after the interim order of the Election Commission, the names 'Mamata All India Trinamool Congress', 'All India Trinamool Congress Mamata', and 'Trinamool Mamata Congress' have been given by Mamata Banerjee. Mamata Banerjee has mentioned symbols like football player and cricket bat as her first choice as symbols.
Whereas the rebel group led by Ritabrata Banerjee has demanded from the Election Commission to give 'black board', 'envelope' and 'torch' as symbols. However, information about what names the rebel group has given for the party is not available at present. Both the groups have different reactions to the Election Commission's decision to temporarily freeze the name and symbol of TMC. While Mamata Banerjee's side has expressed opposition to this decision of the Election Commission, the rebel group is happy with it. On the other hand, Congress is also taking Mamata Banerjee's side in this matter.
